WE ARE in Youth Month, a time when South Africans reflect on the legacy of 1976, where a generation of children took to the streets with nothing but courage.

Nearly 50 years later, many of our children are still on the streets, not in protests but used as gang recruits and drug couriers.

The latest data paints a very grim picture: children as young as 12 years old are being recruited into gangs in the Western Cape. Not just caught in the crossfire, but actually recruited, trained and used as runners, even killers.
