Essential tools for deskless workforces
The Star
|February 04, 2026
DESKLESS workforces run on smartphones and mobile data.
But while devices and data have become a key part of corporate infrastructure, many workers still carry the high costs of owning mobile phones and staying connected. For millions of deskless workers, reliable phones and data are luxuties they simply can’t afford. When organisations leave it up to them to provide these essential work tools, it can hamper productivity significantly and put unnecessary financial pressure on employees. It’s time for a mindset change: employers should be helping deskless workers to access digital tools at a price they can afford.
Connectivity constraints
Around 75% of South Africa's workforce is deskless — representing the nation’s frontline workers in security, hospitality and retail, as well as behind-the-scenes employees such as drivers, logistics and agriculture workers.
