US President Donald Trump called off new military strikes on Iran, hours after threatening to escalate the war by seizing control of the country’s oil industry.

Mr Trump said in a social media post that he made the move “based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved”.

He is now looking ahead to a big weekend for his presidency, which will also see him turn 80. It also marks the return of the World Cup to the US for the first time in 32 years, after Mr Trump threw himself into winning the bid to co-host the international football tournament during his first term.
