Remember to check loved ones with dementia

As autumn heads towards winter, the Alzheimer's Society has issued some advice for helping people living with the condition...

Remember to check loved ones with dementia

A DEMENTIA charity is advising people to check in on loved ones, friends and neighbours who have the condition over winter.

The Alzheimer's Society says easonal changes, including the upcoming clock change on October 26, can be unsettling for people living with dementia. Colder temperatures may also bring extra challenges.

People with dementia may not always recognise when they're cold or be able to communicate discomfort, which makes this time of year particularly difficult.

Now Angelo Makri, senior knowledge officer for wellbeing at the charity, has shared useful tips (see panel) to help keep people living with dementia safe and well during autumn and winter.

He said: "Knowing how to best support someone with dementia during the colder months, by checking in on them and following these tips, helps to make sure they are comfortable, safe and able to stay as independent as possible.

"Every action, whether it's checking in on a neighbour, donating or supporting research, adds up."

Visit alzheimersociety. org.uk or call the Dementia Support Line on 0333 150 3456."

Despite this routine occurring twice every year, many people are caught out by the extra hour lost or gained. But for people with dementia, the time change may cause more than just a surprise. Here are three top tips to help people with dementia:
