New school dinners for kids as loss-making service to go

Council says change will prevent price of meals soaring

STOKE-ON-TRENT'S loss-making in-house school catering service is to end in a bid to stop meal prices rocketing.

An independent review found the cost of a school dinner would have needed to rise by more than a third for the city council to break even on feeding children.

To reduce the burden on the taxpayer, the council has identified Chartwells as a preferred third-party operator for schools that wish to take up the offer.
