New plans to demolish 'abandoned shopping centre'

PLANS have been submitted for the partial demolition of a shopping centre.

The Maltings shopping centre, in Uttoxeter, has been earmarked for regeneration since 2023.

But it has now been decided to separate the demolition from the wider regeneration project.

Now a phased demolition is set to take place which will allow the continued use of the area.

Once all work has been completed, a temporary scheme will be in place before the final regeneration takes place.

In total, 19 of the 24 units in the precinct will be demolished. They have been unlettable for some time owing to their condition, according to the demolition application. The 'dilapidated' units, combined with antisocial behaviour, have made the area unattractive for businesses.
