CM Majhi calls Emergency a "dark chapter" in India's history on Samvidhan Hatya Diwas

Acknowledges BJP's pivotal role in opposing Emergency; fight for protection of the Constitution, fundamental rights

ON the occasion of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, observed by the Odisha government's Odia Language, Literature, and Culture Department, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India as a "dark chapter" in the country's history.

Addressing the gathering at the ECOR auditorium here on Wednesday, CM Majhi highlighted the atrocities and repression faced during the Emergency period, stressing that it was an era the nation could never forget.

"The brutalities of the Emergency remain etched in the memories of all those who lived through it," said CM Majhi. "The aim of observing this day is not just to remember the past but to create widespread awareness about the dangers of authoritarian rule. The Government of India has decided to organize year-long programs to educate the younger generation about this critical chapter in history. These programs will culminate on June 25, 2026," he added.
