Behind every milestone of HSBC's 150-year journey in the Philippines are the people — employees, customers, and partners — who continue to shape its story of growth and opportunity.
BSP Governor Dr. Eli Remolona Jr., together with Sandeep Uppal and Corrie Purisima at HSBC Philippines CEO Sandeep Uppal receives recognition from Euromoney as the Philippines' Best International Bank HSBC Philippines started its countdown to 150 years in the Philippines in 2024
When The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) opened its doors in Manila in 1875, it arrived at a time of thriving global trade.
From financing sugar exports in the 19th century to enabling modern enterprises and families today, HSBC Philippines has been part of the country's growth story for a century and a half—bridging Filipinos to opportunities beyond borders.
Over 150 years, HSBC has grown alongside the Philippines.
In 1883, it expanded to Iloilo to support the sugar industry; in 1906, it helped finance the nation's first railway. After World War II, HSBC Philippines became the first bank to restore prewar credit balances in full - a gesture that helped rebuild communities and reaffirmed the trust it continues to uphold today.
From those beginnings to its current presence across Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao, HSBC Philippines' legacy is one of long-term commitment to the nation's development. Its network now serves individuals, families, corporations, and institutions — helping them grow their wealth, expand globally, and contribute to the country's progress.
"Our faith in the Philippines has never wavered," said Sandeep Uppal, CEO and Head of Banking, HSBC Philippines. "For 150 years, we have stood with the Philippines - supporting ambition, enabling growth, and opening up a world of opportunity."
True to its purpose, HSBC continues to play an active role in nation-building.

So many topics, so little space
I have made a habit of “collecting” topics, writing down people’s concerns and a list of ideas, all of which I believe are relevant and have value for everyday Filipinos. My problem is I have a self-imposed word limit of 950 words per column.
