The government welcomed yesterday United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression Irene Khan and promised her full support “in the spirit of openness and cooperation.”

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the administration would ensure “the successful implementation of the UN SR’s mandate during her country visit.” Khan’s official visit starts today and ends on Feb. 2. “This visit underscores the Philippines’ commitment to fostering a robust environment for freedom of expression and opinion, in alignment with global human rights principles,” it said.

Khan was received at the airport by lawyer Hue Jyro Go from the Presidential Task Force on Media Security.
