New transport chief wants cheaper airfares, bidding for NSCR

The new transportation chief is holding himself to high standards in his first days as he plans to slash airfares for the holidays and open the bidding for the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR).
Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez is meeting with airlines next week to find ways on how to cut plane fares ahead of the Undas break and the Christmas season.
The meeting will pick up from where former transport chief Vince Dizon left off in his request to carriers to lower fares for domestic flights to popular destinations like Siargao.
Based on the monitoring of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), airfares skyrocketed to as much as P30,000 for a round trip to Siargao. Dizon thought the rate was too high given that the fuel surcharge had sunk to record lows this year.
