When I first became a campus journalist, one statement never left my mind as I went on to pursue a BA Communication degree: "The news is supposed to be boring." I understood it quickly, and I believed it. After all, the news has always been straightforward. Present the reader with the five Ws and one H, keep things concise by following the inverted pyramid—start with the most important information, then follow with supporting details—and let the people make decisions based on the facts given. Straightforward. Concise. Boring. That's how the news was always described.
