Pressure grows on Israel as horror in Gaza fuels calls for Palestinian statehood

The push by world powers to end the war in Gaza by recognising Palestinian statehood is intensifying - first from France, then from the UK and now Canada.
In the past week, all three have said they will formally recognise the state of Palestine at the UN general assembly in New York next month, provided Hamas disarms and relinquishes political power. Britain said it would withhold recognition if Israel halted its assault on Gaza and its construction of settlements in the West Bank.
The chances of that happening are remote. With US backing, Israel has condemned the move as a reward for terrorists and an insult to the victims of 7 October. Hamas said yesterday it would not disarm until an independent Palestinian state is established.
