India sends notice to Pak for Indus Water Treaty review

INDIA has served a formal notice to Pakistan seeking review and modification of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), citing fundamental changes in the circumstances and impact of persistent cross-border terrorism, government sources said on Wednesday.
The notice was issued to Pakistan on August 30 under Article XII(3) of the IWT, government Sources said on Wednesday. Under Article XII(3) of the IWT, its provisions may from time to time be modified.
The treaty was signed on September 19, 1960 in Karachi between the then Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Pakistan's field marshal General Ayub Khan.
With the notification, India has called upon Pakistan to begin government-to-government (G2G) negotiations to review the treaty.
"India's notification highlights fundamental and unforeseen changes in circumstances that require a reassessment of obligations under various articles of the Treaty.
