Centre to embed caste enumeration in census

WITH the Bihar assembly elections due in months, the Centre pulled off a surprise on Wednesday by announcing its decision to include caste enumeration in the much delayed census exercise.
By doing so, it sought to appropriate an important Opposition plank. Caste census was a major election issue of the Opposition in the run up to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
The decision on the caste census was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While census is under the purview of the Centre, a few states have conducted caste surveys "non-transparently", which created doubts in society, Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw alleged.
