More than 100 people, including CPM state secretary P Shanmugam, were arrested on Friday at Malayadikuppam, near Naduveerapattu, for attempting to stage a protest by planting cashew saplings despite police restrictions.

The demonstration, organised by the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association, was held to demand compensation for farmers and to oppose the district administration's eviction drive.
Farmers from villages under Vellaikarai panchayat, including Malayadikuppam, Pethankuppam, Kodikkanpalayam, and Keerapalayam, had been cultivating crops such as cashew, jackfruit, and coconut on approximately 160 acres of government barren land.
However, on January 29, the Cuddalore district administration removed thousands of these trees, citing encroachment.
