THE West Bengal government suffered a major setback on Monday after President Droupadi Murmu disapproved the West Bengal University Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2022.

- SUBHENDU MAITI @ Kolkata

This effectively blocks the state's move to change the role of chancellors in government-aided and sponsored universities. The Bill, passed by the Assembly in 2022, aimed to make the Chief Minister the chancellor of universities. The state cabinet had approved the proposal, arguing that it would help improve academic governance. With the President's decision, the Governor of West Bengal, by virtue of the constitutional post, will continue to serve as the chancellor of staterun universities. Sources
