Lifestyle factors, caesarean section pushing up hernia cases, says expert

INCIDENCE of hernia is increasing among men and women due to lifestyle-related factors such as abdominal obesity and smoking, according to C Palanivelu, founder and chairman of GEM Hospital and pioneer in laparoscopic surgery in South India.
Speaking to TNIE on the side-lines of a conference on minimal access hernia surgery, Hernia Fest 2025, held by GEM Hospital Puducherry in association with the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) on Saturday, Palanivelu said, "Around 22-27% of men are developing hernia, while 30-40% of women who undergo abdominal surgeries such as Caesarean section and hysterectomy are developing incisional hernias."
