Pondy unveils ambitious industrial expansion plans with subsidies, and infrastructure upgrades to attract investors and drive growth

UDUCHERRY is undergoing a transformative journey to enhance its industrial landscape, aiming to position the union territory as a key investment hub. As part of this initiative, the government has unveiled ambitious plans, including the development of a new industrial park in Sedarapet-Karasur and the optimal utilisation of land banks belonging to the closed Anglo-French Textile Mill (AFT) and Swadeshi-Bharathi Textile Mill Limited (SBTML). These parcels of land will be repurposed for IT parks, a textile park, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) centres, and commercial hubs, including the PM-EKTA Mall, in consultation with the Government of India, Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan said.

Investment on Focus Chief Minister N Rangasamy emphasised the importance of the industrial sector in economic growth, employment generation, and foreign exchange earnings through exports. To support industrial expansion, the Puducherry government has allocated ₹122.33 crore to the Industries and Commerce Department in the 2025-26 budget.

Minister for Industries and Commerce A Namassivayam said that the government aims to promote revenue-generating, pollution-free, and employment-intensive industries such as IT, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and start-ups. Land will be provided to establish industrial units, with 750 acres in the Sedarapet-Karasur industrial park already handed over to the Puducherry Industrial Promotion Development and Industrial Corporation (PIPDIC) for investor allotment. Following environmental and wildlife clearance from the Central government, the process is expected to be completed within the year. IIT Madras has also expressed interest in acquiring 100 acres of industrial park space.

WHEN A CLEAN-UP BECOMES A MESS

A year ago, the idea of a massive nationwide exercise to visit every single household to verify, add, or delete voters was not on anyone’s radar. After all, the Narendra Modi government did not even conduct the mandatory dec-adal census. Chief Election Commi sioner Gyanesh Kumar took charge in February 2025 and, for three months, did not utter the term ‘special intensive revision’ (SIR). Suddenly, one day in June, the CEC announced a nationwide SIR beginning with Bihar. Why so suddenly and so hastily?
