Organisations to use small, task-specific AI models more by 2027

By 2027, organisations will implement small, task-specific AI models three times more often than general-purpose large-language models (LLMs), according to Gartner, an American research and advisory firm.

It states that firms planning to adopt small, task-specific AI models should consider piloting contextualised models—particularly in areas where business context is crucial or where LLMs have failed to meet expectations in terms of response quality or speed.

Firms should also adopt composite approaches, such as identifying use cases where single-model orchestration is insufficient, and strengthen their data and skills capabilities.

Gartner recommends that organisations prioritise data preparation efforts to collect, curate and organise the data necessary for fine-tuning language models. Simultaneously, they should invest in upskilling personnel across technical and functional teams, including AI and data architects, data scientists, AI and data engineers, risk and compliance teams, procurement teams, and business SMEs, in order to effectively drive these initiatives.
