Residents warned as rising inflows force shutters to open in major dams

AMID heavy monsoon showers lashing Palakkad district, the water level in almost all major dams have surged, prompting authorities to open spillway shutters to prevent overflow and ensure safe storage levels.

Several parts of the district have also been placed on high alert due to rising river levels, especially along the Bharathapuzha.

In Tamil Nadu, the Aliyar Dam has raised all 11 shutters by 12 cm, releasing 2,274 cubic feet of water per second (cusecs). Additionally, 170 cusecs are being discharged through the river sluice and 7 cusecs through other minor channels, resulting in a total release of 2,457 cusecs into the Bharathapuzha.

Due to continued inflow from heavy rainfall in the catchment, three spillway shutters of the Parambikulam Dam were opened by 10 cm each on Friday night, releasing 1,191 cusecs of water.
