Only four space-faring nations are capable of space docking today

- HRITHIK KIRAN BAGADE

Around 4.40 pm UTC on March 16, 1966, NASA launched its Gemini 8 spacecraft from Launch Complex 19 at Cape Kennedy Air Force Station in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Intended for a series of tests, especially for crewed spaceflight, Gemini 8 conducted a space rendezvous, and the first docking of two spacecraft in orbit. This was the first spaceflight of Neil Armstrong, who was accompanied by David R. Scott, and they both traversed a distance of 2,93,206 km, completing six orbits of the Earth, over 10 hours, 41 minutes and 26 seconds. Meanwhile, the mission could not realize its final objective, extravehicular activity, and had to abort for safety of the crew.

However, the Gemini 8 spacecraft's successful docking with the Agena Target Vehicle (GATV) at an altitude of 161.3 nautical miles, which occurred during its fifth revolution, unlocked the infinite potential for space exploration, allowing space stations to come to life.

Space exploration has always been a field defined by monumental transformative innovations. One of the most important technological advancements that enables the continued success of human spaceflight is space docking technology. Docking is a critical component of operations for both crewed and uncrewed missions.

The Soyuz 7 docked with the uncrewed Soyuz 6 spacecraft in orbit, demonstrating the feasibility of crewed missions involving multiple spacecraft. This feat paved the way for subsequent missions to the Salyut space stations, where long-duration stays and complex operations were conducted.
