AFTER assembly elections wrapped up in five states, there is growing talk among politicians in the state capital about moving the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections forward by a few weeks.
The current assembly, which began after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took office in March 2022, is set to finish its tenure on May 22, 2027. However, some discussions suggest that if the elections are held earlier, voting might finish by the end of January 2027 instead of March, which would help with administrative planning.
The Election Commission of India can hold elections up to six months before a state assembly’s term ends, which supports the current speculation.
