THE new standardisation policy for air conditioners, which prohibits cooling below 20°C or heating above 28°C, has the potential to succeed in India with a phased approach over the next three to four years, according to industry experts.
As per Shaurya Anand, research associate at TERI, the policy should initially be rolled out in large public and commercial buildings, followed by awareness campaigns in residential sectors. Power minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Tuesday announced a new provision for temperature standardisation in ACs; it will set the temperature range between 20°C and 28°C. This means air conditioners will not be allowed to cool below 20°C or heat above 28°C.
