Kerala teacher faces action over FB post

DEPUTY director of education (Palakkad) T M Salina Beevi has directed the management of TAM UP School, Edathanattukara, in Palakkad district to initiate disciplinary action, including suspension from service, against teacher T K Ashraf for posting social media content that allegedly defamed the state government and the department of education.
The Facebook post from Ashraf -- the state general secretary of Wisdom Islamic Organisation, a Salafi group in Kerala -- against the government's decision to introduce the zumba fitness routine in schools had hit the headlines, triggering widespread discussion in the state. In the post, Ashraf said he and his son would stay away from the zumba sessions and were ready to face any action.

PARNA Sen’s 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981) was a landmark in my formative years as a film buff. I am not sure where I watched it. But what has stayed with me till date are Jennifer Kendal’s eloquent presence as the quiet and secluded Anglo-Indian teacher Violet Stoneham, and Ashok Mehta’s camera that captures the many shades of loss and solitude that imbue the film, and the textures of a fading world it is set in. It was about underscoring the tenuousness of a community as well as the vulnerability of an individual.
