CIIL launches Bhasha Sanchika, a digital repository

IN a significant step towards preserving India's vast linguistic diversity, the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) launched 'Bhasha Sanchika' (Language Archive of India), a comprehensive digital language repository, during its 57th Foundation Day celebrations held here on Thursday.

Developed using the widely adopted open-source digital asset management system DSpace, Bhasha Sanchika or the Language Archive of India is a pioneering platform that brings together language preservation, documentation, and technology under one roof. The initiative by CIIL, according to academic coordinator Dr Sujoy Sarkar, is a commitment to promoting linguistic harmony and supporting the learning of 20 Indian languages by non-native speakers.

Launching this digital repository during the foundation day celebration, he said Bhasha Sanchika offers a vibrant and structured space for the long-term preservation and secure storage of linguistic and cultural data. With a focus on enhancing the digital visibility of Indian languages, the repository provides access to materials in diverse formats, including text, image, audio, and video.
