Door-to-door collection not regular, garbage strewn on Madurai roads

EVEN as the corporation as part of improving solid waste management in the city is in the process of installing compactor bins at every street corner, residents complain that the large bins overflow with garbage by noon every day and that the waste that gets strewn around it remains till they are emptied.

Expressing concerns that this would cause health risks and attract stray animals, they urge the corporation to address the issue by improving its door-to-door waste collection.

K Saravanan, a resident of Avaniyapuram, said, "Though two massive metal bins are placed in the area, they fill up before noon as the locality is close to the local market." Additional waste then gets dumped outside the bins, leading to the space around it to be filled with it. It is cleared only when the bins are emptied.
