Live-in relationship not illegal, state’s duty to protect every citizen, says HC

THE Allahabad High Court came to the rescue of 12 women, who were in live-in relationships and had petitioned the court seeking protection, fearing a threat to their lives.

In its observation, the High Court said that a live-in relationship could not be called illegal and living together without the sanctity of marriage was not an offence.It said that it was the state's duty to protect every citizen, and a couple's unmarried status did not deprive them of their fundamental rights. While hearing 12 petitions, the HC ordered the police chiefs of the districts concerned to provide immediate protection if someone would try to harass them or disturb their peaceful living.
