KOTTAYAM recorded widespread damages in torrential rain and wind that swept through the district on Monday.

- EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @Kottayam

As per reports, several houses and buildings were damaged and agricultural crops, including rubber, were destroyed in the wind that blew along with heavy spell of downpour.

The Manimala and Meenachil rivers overflowed their banks, leading to traffic disruptions on various roads as water inundated residential areas. Although a red alert was issued, the intensity of the rainfall diminished by the afternoon, alleviating some of the immediate danger.

Water levels reached the Mundakayam causeway, and by the time they approached the Pazhayidam causeway, the rain had lessened.

However, rising water levels in the Pamba river have raised concerns in the hilly regions of Erumeli.

Significant damage has been reported in Vaikom municipality and surrounding panchayats, including Chembu, Udayanapuram, Vechur, and Thalayazham.
