Seabed mapping soon to recover sunken ship, missing containers

WITH many cargo containers still missing after cargo vessel MSC Elsa 3 sunk off the Kerala coast, and amid mounting concerns over oil pollution and widespread dispersal of plastic pellets, the Directorate General (DG) of Shipping has initiated recovery efforts.
The directorate will soon carry out a comprehensive seabed mapping, in a major effort to recover the missing containers and the sunken ship as well as to address marine ecological concerns.
The mapping would be done using the multi-beam survey system and the cost will be borne by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the vessel owner. MSC has appointed US firm T&T Salvage to recover containers, remove oil and curb marine and environmental pollution.
