Poles of inaccessibility are more than just geographic curiosities. They are potent symbols of remoteness, endurance, and discovery, a journey to the most remote and isolated corners of our planet, where distance defines desolation

- HRITHIK KIRAN BAGADE

Point Nemo, named after the elusive Captain Nemo in Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, is a textbook case for inaccessibility, over which even airliners avoid flying due to safety concerns and the lack of nearby landing strips, in the event of emergencies.

Inaccessible lands Perhaps the most well-known land-based pole of inaccessibility is located in Eurasia, often considered the 'Continental Pole of Inaccessibility'. Situated in China, near its border with Kazakhstan, this point lies approximately 2,645 km from the nearest coastline. It is roughly located at 46°17'N 86°40'E, deep within the Dzoosotoyn Elisen Desert in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Reaching it is not only a geographical challenge, but also a logistical one. The region is characterised by harsh terrain, extreme temperatures, and a lack of infrastructure. Unlike Mount Everest or the poles, there are no facilities, marked trails, or nearby settlements. It is a place more notable for its isolation than its elevation.

Another remarkable location is the 'Antarctic Pole of Inaccessibility', which represents the point on the Antarctic continent that is farthest from the Southern Ocean. It lies at approximately 85°50'S 65°47'E, in the heart of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet.
