Greens Oppose Mahadayi Project, Call To Intensify Struggle

Environmentalist Capt. Nitin Dhond on Tuesday appealed to the people to come together and fight against the implementation of the Mahadayi project.

Diversion of water from the Mandovi river to implement the project will lead to the destruction of the Western Ghats, he said at a meeting on "Our Water Our Right" held in Belagavi.

Capt. Dhond said diversion of water from the Mandovi will affect the natural course of other rivers. The Mahadayi river, which flows through the Western Ghats, keeps the forests green, beside ensuring water to wild animals.

Thousands of hectares of forest land will be destroyed because of the Kalasa-Banduri project. It will lead to the desertification of the North Karnataka region, Capt. Dhond said.
