HUNDREDS of high school students in the rural areas of Koppal district do not know how to read and write Kannada and English alphabets. This means they cannot read or write their own names. Some teachers are now forced to teach ABCD and Aa Aaa, Ee, Eee alphabets to students of class 7 and 8.
This is shocking to many officials as these students will become eligible to write the SSLC examination in two or three years. Education Department officials are inspecting each and every government school to get to the bottom of the reasons behind this widespread illiteracy.
