More Than Just A Speech Problem

Understand all about language delay in children

S a speech-language pathologist, one of the most common phrases I hear from concerned parents is, "My child isn't speaking clearly, but it's just a speech problem, right? They'll grow out of it." Or sometimes, "They'll learn to talk once they start school." Despite the fact that these feelings are frequently motivated by optimism and comfort, they reflect a common misconception that may unintentionally delay crucial support for a child's speech and language development.

The truth is—what many call a 'speech problem' is often a language delay. Understanding this difference, and acting early, is perhaps the most significant gift you can give your child.

Speech vs Language

Speech is the physical act of producing sounds and words. It involves the coordination of our lips, tongue, jaw, and breath. Difficulties here might sound like stammering, unclear pronunciation and change in voice quality. Language is a much broader concept. It's about how we understand and use words to communicate ideas. This includes:
