TMC's Abhishek to visit Matua areas after Modi pitch; sharp split emerges

POLITICAL temperature has gone up in Matua-dominated belt of West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district with a group of the community aligned to the BJP opposing Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's visit on January 9 to Thakurnagar, drawing a sharp response from the group supporting the TMC.
Abhishek's visit plan comes days after PM Narendra Modi virtually addressed a gathering in Nadia district, a heartland of Matuas. Abhishek will offer prayer at Thakurnagar temple of Harichand Thakur and Guruchand Thakur, spiritual leaders of Matuas. Shantanu Thakur, Union minister of state for shipping and BJP MP from Matua-dominated Bongaon, has called upon his supporters to protest against Abhishek's programme.
