Raj violence over slapgate, candidate held

INDEPENDENT candidate Naresh Meena was arrested on Thursday following high drama and violence in the Deoli-Uniara assembly seat in Rajasthan's Tonk where bypolls were held on Wednesday.
During the polls, Meena, a Congress rebel contesting as an Independent, slapped Malpura SDM Amit Chaudhary outside a polling booth in front of hundreds of people, accusing the official of influencing voters.
The incident triggered protests from both his supporters and Rajasthan Administrative Service officials. Meena's supporters clashed with police and indulged in violence.
"Samravata village witnessed ruckus, stone pelting, and arson late on Wednesday night when police tried to apprehend Naresh Meena, after he allegedly physically assaulted SDM Amit Chaudhary at a polling booth," Ajmer range inspector-general of police Om Prakash said.
