Kurnool farm distress: Prices of tomatoes plummet to ₹6 per kg

THE prices of tomatoes, which hit the sky last month, have plummeted to as low as ₹3 per kilo in the major markets of Pathikonda and Pyapili in Nandyal district. In Pyapili mandal headquarters, farmers have threw away the produce on the national highway 44 near the vegetable market only to be eaten by cattle while some have left the crop in the fields.

When tomatoes were sold at a higher price of ₹170 per kilo in Madanapalle market and ₹200 in retail markets last month bringing in rich benefits to the farmers, there was no produce in Kurnool district. With arrivals starting from Anantapur, the prices of tomatoes have come down drastically.
