SP chief Akhilesh Yadav stuck to his stance of carving out a quota for women from the backward classes, Scheduled Castes and minorities within the 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Significantly, he demanded that the right to reserve seats must rest with the political parties and not with the Election Commission.
