After syrup deaths, govt plans to make QR code must to fight fake drugs

IN the wake of deaths of over 20 children due to substandard cough syrups in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the centre plans to mandate barcoding and QR code-based traceability for vaccines, anti-microbials, narcotic and psychotropic drugs, and anticancer medicines.
According to the notification issued by the Union Health Ministry on October 16, certain rules will be amended under the Drugs Rules, 1945. It said the amendments have been proposed after consulting the Drugs Technical Advisory Board.
