WHEN the US-Israeli war against Iran broke out and disrupted global maritime trade between Asia and Europe, shipping liners started opting for the older and safer Cape of Good Hope route instead of the shorter Suez Canal Passage.

The war has pushed up the oil price, sending fear down the spines of South Africans already battling to keep heads above water economically. However, as we brace for the economic fallout that is sure to follow, the increased sea traffic down the southern tip of Africa past our shores is a welcome silver lining on this dark geopolitical cloud.
Indeed, President Cyril Ramaphosa alluded to this blessing in disguise last week. But, as is often the case with our leadership, there is no guarantee that our country is geared to take full advantage of this temporary boon.
