How early do you need to think about extracurricular activities for UCAS Tariff points?

- Kat Storr

Plan ahead

Words:

You might think you needn't worry about university or higher education (HE) applications until you have a prediction of the academic grades you'll achieve, but in reality some teenagers may need to be thinking about them sooner.

The higher education entry rate among 18-year-olds was 36.4% in the UK in 2024 and, of course, places at the most prestigious universities or on very popular courses mean you really need to stand out from the crowd.

This is where UCAS Tariff points might come in. This is when your grades and qualifications are given a numerical value, which is then used to assess whether you meet an institution's entry requirements. As well as the subjects you choose in school, activities you do outside of the classroom can also help increase this value.
