Discover the Vipava Valley and Karst Plateau

The Vipava Valley in Slovenia opens onto the Gorizia plain in the west, and beyond that into the Italian region of Friuli. Both this valley and the Karst Plateau above the Gulf of Trieste are well known for their Mediterranean scenery, reminiscent of Tuscany. The high plateau, which was the source of the geological term 'karst', surrounds the Vipava Valley, making for an extremely picturesque landscape.

Discover the Vipava Valley and Karst Plateau

This part of Slovenia has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Throughout its history, the Vipava Valley has been a significant trade route, with a Roman road running through it, connecting the Italian city of Aquileia and present-day Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital. The Karst is considered the oldest cultural landscape in Europe, known for the earliest cave explorations and for having the world's first tourist cave almost 400 years ago. The rich history has left numerous traces in both regions, which are worth discovering today.
