A SPECTACULAR light show will turn Durham Cathedral into an immersive world of colour and sound this autumn with the return of the Luxmuralis artists.

Stories brought to life in cathedral light show

The team behind dramatic takeovers of the city landmark over the past three years will be back for a fourth time, in October, with another after-dark treat.

Initially, three shows by the Luxmuralis collaboration were planned, with lead artist Peter Walker being keen to show the cathedral as it had never been seen before.

The debut event, with a theme of Life, dazzled visitors in 2022 who watched as the interior of the building was brought alive each evening of its week-long run with changing colours and projected images, swirling over its ancient walls and pillars.

In 2023 came Science - a new theme and new atmospheric soundscape - followed by 2024’s Space, which proved different again; immersing visitors in a story that took in scenes of galaxies and asteroids on their route around the building.

And now another new adventure will be in store from October 8-12.

The theme this year will be The Storytellers and will ‘bring stories out of the pages of their books and into reality; it says. The literary theme ties in nicely with the cathedral’s major exhibition Magna Carta and the North which, as previously reported, is currently on display.
