August 23, 2025

COUNCIL proposals to transform a massive stretch of Sunderland’s high street for potential new offices, leisure facilities, shops and flats have been formally lodged, with residents encouraged to share their views.

- CHRIS BINDING Local Democracy Reporter

Sunderland City Council has submitted an application to its own planning department requesting outline planning permission for a “mixed-use development” at 56-90 High Street West.

‘The application site includes four ‘development plots’ at the northern end of High Street West, encompassing the current Sports Direct store and neighbouring Dicksons unit, the former Marks & Spencer store that now stands empty, the demolished site of the Argos and Mothercare store, and the current ‘West Walk’ retail unit between Queen Street and the Holiday Inn.
