Nesting season success at city's nature reserve

A CITY’S nature reserve is celebrating a summer of bird nesting successes.

Gosforth nature reserve off Salters Lane in Newcastle, with its 61 hectares of woodland, wetland, reed beds and meadow land is home to 1,600 recorded species, including 189 bird species.

Managed by the Natural History Society of Northumbria since 1929, it is the oldest nature reserve in the North East.

Five years ago barn owls returned to the reserve for the first time since the 1970s. Since then, a pair of owls has successfully raised chicks.
