Horror crash led Trevor to job in brain ‘rehab’
The Journal
|October 15, 2025
TREVOR McKay was just 21 when, on his way to begin some leave while in the Royal Navy, he was involved in a massive motorbike crash on the south coast.
Trevor, from Bedlington in Northumberland, suffered a long list of serious injuries - and says he was lucky to survive thanks to colleagues who were following him and then flagged down emergency services.
He was airlifted to hospital and underwent extensive surgery. However, a long road to recovery beckoned for a lad Trevor now describes as "still just a big kid really". His injuries included a bleed on the brain which led to a stroke, four broken ribs, a broken eye socket and a tear in his spinal cord.
But, thanks to extensive rehabilitation Trevor has recovered - and after a return to the Navy became difficult due to his injuries, he found himself in a job working at Walkergate Park Hospital in Newcastle supporting others who are going through very similar trauma to that he experienced.
