CARING COMMITMENTS IMPACT GENDER PAY GAP NUMBERS

Part-time working and care responsibilities among female employees at Gateshead Council has been cited as a major contributor to the authority's 10% gender pay gap.

According to figures supplied by the chairperson of the council's women and girls committee, 46% of the local authority's female staff work part-time due to family and caring commitments.

The latest statistics come after it was revealed last week that Gateshead and South Tyneside Council's are the two worst regional local authorities in terms of the gender pay gap, measured by median hourly rates.
