Campaigners call for safety measures on 'lethal' road
The Journal
|June 07, 2025
RESIDENTS in County Durham are campaigning for safety measures to be implemented on a road they say is notoriously dangerous.
The Silence of the Loud campaign aims to raise at least £48,000 so traffic calming measures can be introduced on West Road in Annfield Plain - known locally as 'The Loud'.
So far, £34,000 has been raised by previous local councillors, Joan Nicholson and Christine Bell, as well as Police and Crime Commissioner Joy Allen.
Residents say the road is a hotspot for bad driving, and that two children lost their lives in collisions on the road in the past.
Last year, nine-year-old Daniel Ross, who lives on the street with his mum Jessica Stephenson and dad Craig Ross, was knocked over and sustained a broken leg.
