Ambitious United need to aim high

THE international break is over and now back to the business of the domestic leagues for the women’s game - but in the meantime, I was lucky enough to cover the two Lionesses internationals.

- By JOHN MIDDLETON

In between, I was invited on The Women’s Football Podcast; inevitably I was asked the question about who the next Newcastle United manager should be. My answer, only slightly tongue-in-cheek, was Sarina Wiegman, the England manager!

If everything that has happened since June - and the parting of ways ‘parting of ways’ with Becky Langley - is to be attributed to ‘ambition’ then my answer is a creditable one - Wiegman has won the last three European Championships as coach and reached the last two World Cup finals.

Is there a more successful coach around at the moment? Perhaps domestically you could look at Emma Hayes, who has gone on to win the Olympic title with the USA, and her successor at Chelsea, Sonia Bompastor.
