A start – but only a start – on child poverty problem

CHILD poverty campaigners in the North East have repeated their calls for the Government to take urgent action to reduce the number of children in the region who grow up poor.

On the anniversary of Labour's national election victory, the North East Child Poverty Commission welcomed some measures taken by the Government over the last 12 months but said action was still needed to reduce numbers of children in poorer households. Calls to lift the two-chlid benefit gap - widely seen as the single biggest action that can be taken to reduce poverty - have risen since last year’s election.
