Wimal explains why he won't join Nugegoda rally
The Island
|November 11, 2025
Declaring that the National Freedom Front (NFF) wouldn't join the Opposition rally against the government, NFF leader and former Cabinet Minister Wimal Weerawansa, in a letter addressed to Mahajana Handa (People's Voice), the organising committee of the inaugural meeting, underscored the pivotal importance of reaching a consensus on a range of contentious issues before a broad coalition could be formed.
Alleging that the JVP-led NPP hadn't honoured its far reaching election promises, the NFF, one of the two breakaway factions of the JVP, said that the new government was pursuing the policies of the previous administrations but proceeding in a far worse way.
The former parliamentarian pointed out that they hadn't been able to reach consensus on the secret Sri Lanka-India MoUs that were signed in April this year and other agreements finalised with other external parties, continuation of the IMF agenda, ruination of the local agriculture sector, LGBTO project in the guise of educational reforms, undermining Buddhism, unprecedented threat caused by India being given the opportunity to digital NIC project, and targeting EPF and ETF funds.
